Taking a Break

Before I start this post let me just say: I really enjoy blogging.

But I’ve reached a point this semester where it just doesn’t make sense for me to blog as often as I do while trying to focus on my studies and future career. Sometimes, things become unnecessarily stressful; when that happens, we need to be able to step back and reevaluate things. When something causes more stress than it should, I think that’s when it’s time to take a break.

That being said, for the next few weeks I will not be posting as often. I’ll be back — I just need to take a break. Because blogging isn’t life. And sitting at my computer more than I have to means not enjoying this amazing spring weather.

This website will always be a place devoted to inspiration. Today, I encourage you to never stop looking for that inspiration in the world around you.

Traded, Bought and Sold

For today’s post, I’d like to share my latest story for Ball Bearings magazine with you, “Traded, Bought and Sold.” This feature about human trafficking was inspired by the recent spike in national awareness, in addition to the creation of Ball State’s own International Justice Mission (IJM) chapter, a satellite group of the human rights organization that rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, slavery and oppression.

I hope you learn something new about this social issue by reading this story. You can find it at the URL here, or view it as a PDF here.

Is This Real Life?

In my last post, I challenged you to write a letter in honor of this semester – to list your goals and build motivation for the first day of class.

So how did your first day of classes go? Did they go as you had planned? I know mine sure did not.

In the middle of one of my five Monday classes, I found myself fretting over finances – the very thing I told myself I would not do in my letter. The professor rattled off what needed to be bought, and I just sat there, nervously wringing the fabric of my coat sleeves.

“Is this real life?” I thought to myself. I was in disbelief.

I entered my next class feeling discouraged. But thanks to my professor, not for long. She had us introduce ourselves by stating our name, major and a major tension that is going on in our lives.

With each introduction, I began to feel a little more at ease.  The more tensions were discussed, the more I realized how much college students have in common. We all worry. We all stress. We’re all poor. Most of us want to be successful. We all have problems. We’re all crazy busy.

The beauty of college is, we’re all in it together. All trying to reach a common goal, all trying to prove that we can make it.

I don’t know how your first day of classes went. Maybe you didn’t even have classes. Maybe it was a walk in the park. But for those of us who are already feeling stressed and overwhelmed – just know that you are not alone.

Do This Before Monday

Fellow college students, it’s that time again.

The moment we’ve all been dreading…

The moment when staying up until 2 a.m. becomes normal again – that time is nipping at our heels.

Although it may feel like March outside, January 9th is only two days away.  Therefore, I have decided to write down some things I’d like to keep in mind for the next 15 weeks.

Dear spring semester,

I promise that no matter how demanding and challenging you get, I will face every circumstance with a positive attitude. During these 15 weeks, I promise to remember that grades are not everything, and getting a C is not the end of the world. I promise to enter each class with a desire to takeaway new knowledge. I will not worry about money. I will make more time for friends. I will be stressed and busy, but I will not make excuses for myself. I will see failure as opportunity. I will not let negatives keep me down. I will believe in myself. I will strive to see the beauty in everything.
